As the principal producer and recording engineer for the band Pellie uses mainly outboard equipment and attempts to keep the DAW as clean as possible. “I do use a handful of effects like phasers, stereo enhancement, equalizers, compressors and limiters in Reaper [his DAW of choice], but whenever I have the choice, I prefer to use outboard gear.” Pellie explained. “All tracks are mixed using an analog mixing desk and are passed through a final handful of units for compression, gating and channel/master EQ’ing. I’m convinced that it actually subtracts from the quality of the end result instead of adding to it – but it also provides a certain warmth that I struggle to obtain in the digital-only realm”.
He has a preference for Japanese or American kit, generally, having been a Roland user since his younger years. “Roland/BOSS pioneered and lead the way with MIDI, drum computers and even synthesizers to a degree back then. It’s partly what I’m used to but even today I rarely hear complaints about their stuff. I also really like some of Digitech’s offerings and dbx compressors. That 80’s and 90’s gear is really reliable, too”.
