Other instruments

While most of the tracks are ostensibly “guitar oriented”, quite a few other common and less common instruments are involved. Bia loves to add a harmonica from time to time and whenever possible adds ocarinas, flutes and hand drums, among other things. Pellie also plays a mandolin on a number of tracks. “When we first discussed adding a mandolin I suggested to simply transcribe the parts for guitar, like I did on Boogie With Stu”, he said, “Then Bia went and got me a mandolin so I had to figure out how to play it. It took me an evening to set it up and get familiar, but I really like it more than I’d expected. It’s so small and easy to carry around – and nothing sounds quite like it!”.

When asked about keyboards, Pellie revealed that the matter is a little more complex than might be expected; “Yes, that’s me [on the keyboards], somebody has to do it” he said and added “Initially I was hesistant to credit myself for those sections, but it’s only fair one knows who’s responsible for those sour notes…”. Unsurprisingly, there’s a Roland synthesizer at play. “There’s something beatiful about an electric guitar and a piano playing rock ‘n’ roll together, and I take care of a bit of boogie on the keys and such. I also like to experiment a bit with organ tones. Obviously, I’m no Jon Lord but we got some interesting sounds on some of the Deep Purple covers, for example. Some of that is actually a Roland synth through a VOX amp, through a Marshall cab and mic’ed. I saw how he [Jon] had a Hammond, a fuzz box and a Marshall Major, but I wanted something slightly less aggressive sounding. I also use a CollaB3 VST which is really neat and free of charge.”.
